How do search engines work? – Where do they get all their data from?
Each and every search engine works in a different way, each with its own little robots that run around the web collecting the data which appears each and every time you click search. For instance Google uses a robot known as GoogleBot which if you look upon your webpage states you may even see this little creatures name popup once or twice, if you do this means that Google now have some information about your webpage / website.
What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. This is what you do to webpage’s and site to make them more appealing to the search engines. Several companies offer this as a service to allow you to get a high ranking on such places as Google and MSN.
How does optimisation work?
Easy. You create webpage’s that fulfil the criteria of the search engine so that it can achieve the highest possible ranking. However with things changing all the time how do you know what the criterion is? Well the way we look at it is to select a search engine, enter a key word or phrase and then look and compare the top 10 results to see what they do that you could do.
Can I get a No. 1 position?
Ok by this point I’m sure you have read so much information that you have come to understand that the definition of No. is different for each search engine and each phrase. Yes you can get a no.1 however as you may have already guessed this can never be guaranteed by anyone. Why? Because there are just too many webpage’s out there and if everyone is guaranteed a no.1 spot then who will take no.2.
So what can I do?
Well you have several options.
(A) You can sit back and keep your fingers crossed.
(B) Do some work and submit your pages manually to search engines.
(C) Self optimise your pages using Meta tags and key words.
